Imagine having to match hundreds of manufacturing companies one by one, by hand, form by form, to find the right combination of equipment and expertise. That's exactly what the Créneau Machines team was doing five years ago. Today, that same work is done by artificial intelligence, and it benefits more than 8,500 companies across seven manufacturing associations and chambers of commerce. Here's how a regional organization from the Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec regions changed the game for an entire ecosystem.
That starting point, matching companies by hand, is a reality shared by most manufacturing associations: making the right connections between companies means combing through forms and matching needs and equipment one by one, valuable work that takes an enormous amount of time. Working from that on-the-ground reality alongside CVDM, and in collaboration with UQTR (Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières), Créneau Machines pioneered structured matchmaking, an approach now powered by artificial intelligence.
Créneau Machines is an affiliate member of CVDM. The organization is also part, alongside Alliance Métal Québec, RTMQ and CVDM itself, of a project supported by NGen Canada that helped grow this matchmaking tool to this scale.
For nearly ten years, Créneau Machines has worked to prepare companies in its region working in metal processing, components, and machine design and manufacturing to seize opportunities as they arise, rather than watch them pass by. That approach is delivering concrete results. As major investments take shape in the defense and maritime sectors, companies in the region are now well positioned to join the supply chains behind these large projects.
"For ten years, we have been preparing companies to seize tomorrow's opportunities. Our role is to create the winning conditions so they are visible, recognized and chosen by major contractors," says Nicolas Héon, president of Créneau Machines.
Industrial matchmaking backed by data
On the ground, the tool builds a detailed picture of member companies' production capabilities (equipment, expertise, availability) and proposes targeted connections based on companies' real needs. The results speak for themselves. Over 150 companies have been mapped, more than 6,000 collaboration opportunities have been identified, and 118 types of specialized equipment have been catalogued. At matchmaking activities organized by Créneau Machines, nine out of ten participants established a new business relationship.
"The more we know about the strengths of our industry, the easier it becomes to build business partnerships and quickly respond to the needs of major contractors," adds Nancy Allaire, director of Créneau Machines.
"Matching two companies used to be a long process. Today that step takes a few clicks, and we can spend our time on what really matters: carrying out projects that help companies grow," says Amélie Germain, project manager at Créneau Machines.
This approach makes Créneau Machines a model for the entire ecosystem. What the organization has demonstrated over the past five years, that the initial connection between companies can generate measurable outcomes (contracts, investments, a more resilient industry), is exactly what CVDM aims to make accessible on a larger scale. Other manufacturing associations and chambers of commerce can now build on this already proven path to bring matchmaking to their own members.
Since then, CVDM has kept evolving the tool, notably by adding a search capability that understands the meaning of a request, beyond simple keywords, to better meet the needs of manufacturing organizations.
Créneau Machines is already preparing what comes next: a business development mission to the Maritime provinces is planned for spring 2027, another opportunity for companies in the region to expand their network.
