All that remains is the signing of an agreement with Hydro-Québec to confirm the timeline. Hy2gen is targeting the start of construction of the plant in Baie-Comeau in the second half of 2026. The first production of green ammonia is planned for 2029, depending on Hydro-Québec’s grid-connection schedule.

Since 2023, Hy2gen has been producing green hydrogen at its Werlte plant in Germany. “Developed over the past four years in collaboration with the Baie-Comeau community, the project will contribute to Québec’s decarbonization, economic development, and job creation through the establishment of an industrial ecosystem,” the company said in a press release.

A major global supplier

“We are honored by the Government of Québec’s decision to allocate an energy block to our Courant project in Baie-Comeau. This recognition is a sign of confidence in our vision and our commitment to producing green hydrogen in Québec. It is a giant step forward for Hy2gen Canada and the renewable energy industry,” said Hy2gen CEO Cyril Dufau-Sansot.

Progress on the Courant project marks a new stage for Hy2gen, which aims to become the world’s leading supplier of renewable hydrogen. Securing the electricity supply for Courant shows that Hy2gen has the confidence of decision-making institutions and is establishing itself as a serious player in the global market.

Rejoicing in Baie-Comeau

Working jointly with Hy2gen Canada, the City of Baie-Comeau, Innovation and Development Manicouagan, and the Manicouagan Regional County Municipality (RCM) are pleased that the Government of Québec has recognized the project’s importance and that of its green chemistry ecosystem for decarbonizing the territory and areas north of the 49th parallel. “Our goal was for the Government of Québec to know that all the stakeholders in Baie-Comeau are pulling in the same direction,” said Baie-Comeau Mayor Michel Desbiens.

“I would like to highlight the excellent collaboration among all economic and political stakeholders in Manicouagan to help move forward projects that support our economic development strategy. Determination, perseverance, and teamwork make a difference for our businesses. This selection of Hy2gen’s project is clear proof of that,” said Manicouagan RCM Prefect Marcel Furlong.

“Our region already produces nearly one third of all the hydroelectricity generated in Québec and has extraordinary potential for wind energy development thanks to its energy infrastructure. This unique context is favorable to connecting major industrial projects, such as Hy2gen Canada’s,” explained Guy Simard, Director of Industrial Development at Innovation and Development Manicouagan.
