Digital transformation is part of almost every manufacturing leader's conversation right now. But between intention and action, there's often a gap. Not for lack of will, more for lack of clarity on where to begin.
Here are five simple questions that can help bring things into focus.
1. Do I really know where my operational inefficiencies are?
Before investing in any technology, you need to name the problem precisely. Many SMEs jump to solutions before properly defining the challenge. Talking to peers who have faced similar hurdles is often the best starting point. That's one of the strengths of a network like CVDM: connecting companies with similar realities and experiences worth sharing.
2. Do I have the right people around me to guide this transition?
Digital transformation isn't done alone. Having access to the right technology experts at the right time changes everything. Too often, SMEs don't know that manufacturing specialists exist in their region or sector. Our directory includes technology experts whose specialty is precisely that.
3. Is my data documented well enough to be useful?
You can't optimize what you don't measure. Many companies have data, but it sits in silos or isn't structured to guide decisions. The valorization of manufacturing data has been at the heart of CVDM's mission since its founding, not as an end in itself, but as a concrete lever for competitiveness.
4. Do I know what funding programs are available to help me?
Budget constraints are often cited as the number one barrier to digital transformation. Yet programs exist: CERI, grand V, ESSOR, BDC, among others. The challenge is rarely the absence of resources. It's knowing which ones apply to your situation and how to access them. Depending on regional priorities and sectors involved, certain types of support may be eligible for funding. Check with your regional CED office or write to us, we can point you toward the right resources.
5. Am I visible to the partners who could accelerate my growth?
Digital transformation also means being findable by the right players at the right time. A complementary supplier, a specialized subcontractor, a technology partner: these connections rarely happen by chance. They are built in active networks, with well-documented profiles. That's exactly what CVDM's intelligent matchmaking works to facilitate.
These five questions have no right or wrong answers. They're meant to spark honest reflection, and to serve as a reminder that you don't have to navigate this transition alone.
